Before you call
You can call about someone else.
You can call Exist about a partner, adult child, parent, or client without putting their name on a form. Admissions will listen, explain PHP, IOP, and Truth House, and say whether Exist looks like a fit or a referral is better. We do not share anything about an adult client without that person's written consent.
You can tell us what you have seen. We share only what they agree to.

The first call
What happens when you call for someone.
The call is with the clinic in Laguna Beach, not a call center. Here is what a first call from a family member covers, and you do not need every answer before you call.

What you see
You describe what is happening, including mood, substance use, and what has already been tried. You do not have to use a diagnosis.

The options
Admissions explains PHP, IOP, weekly outpatient, and Truth House, and says honestly when a hospital, detox, or another program fits better.

Insurance
If you have the plan details, we check benefits with a member ID and date of birth. Benefits vary by plan. Verification is not a guarantee of payment.

Their choice
Adults choose their own treatment, so the person who would attend makes the decision. We can talk with them directly when they are ready.
How you can help
Ways to help before they start.
SAMHSA notes that family support can play a major role for someone with a mental health or substance use disorder. These are small, practical ways to offer that support.
Talk to admissionsStart with one question
SAMHSA suggests starting with three plain words, can we talk, when you want to raise a concern.
Name what you see
Describe specific changes you have noticed in mood or behavior, and leave the diagnosis to clinicians.
Learn the skills language
Exist uses DBT-informed skills in PHP and IOP, and the DBT page explains terms you may hear at home.
Look after yourself
Caring for someone is tiring, and SAMHSA urges caregivers to protect their own health and consider support groups or family counseling.
What we can share, and when.
Without consent
Confirming care
We cannot confirm whether someone is a client.
We can speak with the people the client names.
What you share
We can listen to anything you want to tell us.
We can listen, then answer within what they agreed to.
Updates
No updates on attendance or progress.
Only the information the consent covers.
Changing it
The client can sign a consent whenever they choose.
The client can revoke the consent in writing.
Starting is one conversation.
